We live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in a "village" known as McDaniel. It is very close to the resort town of St. Michaels. When we moved to the Eastern Shore, we chose a place near the water as much for the dogs as for ourselves. Although we love to boat and fish, currently our lives are centered around our dogs and dog activities. The Eastern Shore is a great place for retrievers!

We spend much of our free time running off to dog shows or field events/training. Cliff also hunts over our dogs. It is important to us that the Flat-Coated retreiver remains a hunting companion. We are both very involved with breed-related volunteer work.

We chose the name "Tidal Flats" to reflect our interests and to be meaningful for the breed. Tidal Flats are areas where land meets sea, where coastal waterfowl hunting occurs. We also live near the coast, so it is a play on words: "Flat-Coats of a coastal area". All of our dog names have a "bay" or coastal waters theme, in keeping with the kennel name and our interests.

We met in college studying environmental and aquatic science and have been together ever since. Cliff's work involves the benficial use of dredged material to help restore islands and wetlands within the Chesapeake Bay. Jane is a fisheries biologist that specializes in impact assessments in the Chesapeake and other bays.

We both grew up near the water in New Jersey and Jane's family still has a little beach house in Seaside Park. The place is a great getaway for us and the dogs. The picture below was taken on Christmas Day 2000 at Island Beach State Park which is open to dogs year round!
